What is youth mentoring?

Our Youth Mentoring Program is a one-to-one and face-to-face support service that carefully matches a young person with a positive mentor/role-model.

Mentors create a healthy, safe and trusting relationship for our youth. They encourage and empower them to live a life of independence, confidence and purpose, while navigating the challenges of growing up.

How does it work?

A Personalised Journey

We use a one-to-one personalised approach, tailored to each individual mentee's needs, personality and goals.

The journey typically spans 6, 12, or 18 months, and focuses on building a healthy connection with their mentor, setting goals to dream big and exploring new experiences, while having a bunch of fun!

MENTOR MATCHING

We gather and assess the young persons individual needs and interests to determine the best possible match with a mentor.

2

GOAL SETTING

The mentor, mentee and family collaborate to set meaningful goals, such as academic improvement, personal development, exploring new hobbies and more.

3

REGULAR MENTORSHIP SESSIONS

Weekly sessions with a minimum of 3 hours provide opportunities for fun activities, goal progress tracking, and safe spaces for open communication.

4

COLLABORATIVE SUPPORT

Our mentor coordinator and mentor, work closely with families and care teams to ensure a holistic approach to the mentee's well-being and goal progress.

5

MONTHLY FOLLOW-UPS

After completion of the program, mentors continue to engage monthly with mentees to check-in and see how they are going. This is a key part of ensuring the sustainability of progress and success.

What makes us different?

Building a strong foundation

At the heart of Kawa Care is a deep belief in the transformative power of mentorship.

Our program is specifically designed to foster trusting, safe and fun relationships between our mentees and mentors.

A healthy relationship between a mentor and mentee is vital in creating safe spaces for open communication and dialogue. This is the foundation of our mentorship program and we believe it is the key to its success.

The mentor and mentee journey is all about kicking goals, trying out new experiences, skill-building, and personal growth - while of course, having a bunch of fun together!

2

GOAL ACHIEVEMENT

Mentors provide support and guidance as mentees work towards their goals, whether academic, personal, or extracurricular.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Mentoring sessions often involve accessing community events, engaging in social activities, or exploring different local groups.

4

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Mentors help mentees develop essential life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork - to name a few.

Why do young people need a positive role-model?

Childhood and adolescence are periods of tremendous change and growth, yet many young people face significant challenges such as mental health issues, disengagement, and loneliness, often due to factors beyond their control.

These struggles can can often take a huge hit on their self-esteem, self-confidence and relationships and ultimately hinder their ability to reach their full potential.

Youth mentoring offers a solution by pairing young individuals with positive role models who can provide; essential support and insight into challenges, a healthy friendship, and trusted encouragement.

Success in Action

Here are a some of the major steps forward we've seen throughout the program.

  • Boosted Academic Progress - We saw remarkable improvements in students' academic attendance and achievements with a tailored goal-focused approach.

  • Strengthened Family Relationships - Safe conversations with trusted mentors allowed mentees to communicate freely in their own time. This dialogue was vital in navigating buried feelings and regulating emotions, leading to improved communication and healthier relationships at home.

  • Promoting Personal Growth and Emotional Well-being - Young people had a stack of fun trying out new things, learning life skills, and developing confidence in the community.

  • Building a Sense of Community Connection - Participants built lasting community connections with sports and social groups, and a created sense of belonging through engagement and support networks.
